For families in the Fort Smith area, finding activities that are welcoming, inclusive, and accessible for children with special needs can be challenging. Community Connections exists to help close that gap — offering free programs that encourage connection, confidence, and participation for children of all abilities.

Community Connections was established in 2007 by Todd and Amy Denton, owners of Pediatrics Plus Therapy Services, after recognizing that many children with special needs did not have the same opportunities to participate in sports and the arts as their peers. What began as a local response to a specific need has grown into a trusted community resource serving families across Fort Smith and surrounding areas.

The organization’s mission is centered on building strong community relationships while providing free recreational and enrichment opportunities for children ages 3–18. Programs are intentionally designed to support social, emotional, and physical development in a fun, encouraging environment where children can participate at their own pace.

Programs Offered in Fort Smith

Community Connections offers a variety of programs throughout the year, with activities changing seasonally based on interest and availability. Planned programs in Fort Smith for Spring 2026 include Bowling, ACE Tennis, TOP Soccer, Basketball, Art programs, and a Young Adult Social Group.

Each program emphasizes inclusion over competition, creating opportunities for children to build skills, friendships, and confidence while participating alongside peers in a supportive setting.

Who It’s For — and How Families Can Get Involved

Community Connections serves families in Fort Smith and surrounding communities who are seeking safe, inclusive, and engaging activities for children with special needs. Families can learn more about available programs and sign up through the organization’s website at communityconnectionsar.org.

Beyond participants, Community Connections also relies on community involvement to continue expanding its impact. The organization is currently seeking volunteers to help support programs and events, program directors to lead activities, and community partners interested in collaborating to grow local opportunities for children and families.

Those interested in volunteering, partnering, or learning more can connect through the website or reach out directly to Area Director Madilyn Lovell at [email protected].

As Community Connections continues its work in the River Valley, its mission remains simple: create spaces where every child feels included, supported, and encouraged to participate — and strengthen the community in the process.
