Editor’s Note: Apr 19, 2026

The calendar is starting to fill up across the River Valley—and next weekend is a good example of what that looks like.

This week’s issue is centered around Darby Weekend in Fort Smith—a two-day event that brings together history, veterans, and community in a way you don’t see very often locally.

We’ve also got a few upcoming events worth checking out, plus a unique fundraiser coming up that supports local shelter animals.

As always, we’re continuing to build out one of the largest collections of events across the region—so if you’re looking for something to do, you’re in the right place.

Here’s a look at one of the more meaningful events coming up next weekend:

Darby Weekend in Fort Smith — A Full Weekend of History, Honor & Community (April 25–26)

Next weekend, Fort Smith will host one of its more meaningful events of the year—a full weekend built around history, service, and remembrance.

Centered on Fort Smith Darby Days and the General Darby Challenge, the two-day event honors Fort Smith native General William O. Darby—founder of the Army’s first Ranger battalion—and connects the city’s past to the present in a way that goes beyond a typical festival.

🎉 Saturday: Darby Days at the Historic Site

On Saturday, April 25 (10 AM – 3 PM), the Fort Smith National Historic Site becomes a living timeline of American military history—from the Revolutionary War to modern-day service.

What you’ll experience:

  • Living history encampments

  • Military vehicles from WWII through Desert Storm

  • Historic weapons demonstrations

  • Interactive exhibits and family-friendly activities

Between the historic site and the Fort Smith Museum of History, visitors can also expect food trucks, free museum admission, and additional exhibits throughout the day.

🎖️ Key Moments to Catch

  • 10 AM — Veteran’s Honors Ceremony
Includes a flag raising and remarks from local leaders, along with keynote speaker Lydia Klimuk, a Holocaust survivor

  • 11 AM — Meet & Talk with Veterans
A rare opportunity to connect with veterans from WWII through today

🏃 Sunday: The General Darby Challenge

The weekend continues Sunday morning (April 26, 7:00 AM) with the 3rd Annual General Darby Challenge, starting at Cisterna Park in downtown Fort Smith.

Participants can choose from:

  • Half marathon (13.1 miles)

  • 10K

  • 5K

  • Ruck, run, or walk options

  • Virtual participation

More Than a Race

This event is built around remembrance and connection:

  • The course runs along the Arkansas River via the Greg Smith River Trail

  • Includes a Silent Mile honoring 93 Arkansas service members killed or missing in WWII

  • Reflects Fort Smith’s international ties with sister cities in Italy connected to General Darby’s legacy

The 2026 event will also honor Master Sergeant Joshua Lloyd Wheeler, a Sequoyah County native killed in action in Iraq.

📜 Why Fort Smith Celebrates Darby

General William O. Darby, a Fort Smith native, organized and led the Army’s first Ranger battalion during World War II—known as “Darby’s Rangers.”

He was killed in Italy in April 1945 at just 34 years old while leading troops in the final days of the war. His legacy continues to shape Fort Smith’s identity, with connections that still link the city to communities in Italy today.
