Looking for an excuse to spend some time outdoors next weekend? Arkansas Free Fishing Weekend returns June 12–14, giving everyone a chance to fish without needing a fishing license.
Whether you’ve fished for years or just want to take the kids out for an afternoon by the water, this is one of the easiest weekends of the year to give it a try.
🎣 What Is Free Fishing Weekend?
From Friday, June 12 through Sunday, June 14, anyone may fish in Arkansas without a fishing license or trout stamp.
The free fishing period officially begins Friday at noon and runs through Sunday night.
A few things to remember:
No fishing license needed
Daily catch limits and size restrictions still apply
Some special-use fishing areas still have normal restrictions
🧰 Don’t Overthink the Gear
If it’s been years since you fished — or you’re taking kids for the first time — keep it simple.
A basic setup is all you really need:
✔️ Fishing rod & reel
✔️ Hooks and bobbers
✔️ Worms or simple bait
✔️ Sunscreen & bug spray
✔️ Snacks, drinks, and a little patience
Sometimes the memories matter more than the fish.
📍 Places River Valley Locals Often Recommend for Fishing
Looking for somewhere to cast a line during Free Fishing Weekend? We looked around through local recommendations and found a few spots River Valley residents mention often:
Wells Lake (Fort Smith) – Close to town with easy access. A popular choice for families and casual fishing.
Carol Ann Cross Park Lake (Fort Smith) – Frequently mentioned as a simple spot to take kids or enjoy an easy afternoon by the water.
Sugarloaf Lake (Hackett) – A favorite among some local anglers looking for a quieter setting and the chance to catch larger fish.
Lee Creek Area (Van Buren) – A longtime local recommendation with shoreline access and scenic surroundings.
Lake Fort Smith – A solid option if you want to make a short drive and enjoy a full day outdoors.
Of course, every angler has a favorite spot — and some folks guard their “secret” fishing holes pretty closely 😄
🎣 Family Fishing Derbies
The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will also host family-friendly fishing derbies on Saturday, June 13, with ponds stocked for young anglers.
Some derbies require registration in advance, and additional community events are planned around the state.

🪱 Need Bait Before Free Fishing Weekend?
If you're planning to get out on the water next weekend, local anglers frequently mention these spots for bait and basic fishing gear:
Mackie’s One Stop (Fort Smith) – A popular local recommendation on Midland for worms, live bait, and fishing basics.
Pick & Tote (Van Buren) – Convenient option for River Valley anglers on the Van Buren side.
Make A Wake (Fort Smith) – Local tackle option for gear and supplies.
Speed E Mart (Greenwood) – Locals mention minnows, worms, crickets, and other fishing bait options.
Of course, Walmart and sporting goods stores can work in a pinch too — but local bait shops often know what’s biting around the area.
